Interested in becoming a member at Staple Goods?

Staple Goods, an artist-run gallery on St. Roch Avenue in the St. Claude Arts District, is adding a new member for the 2020-2021 exhibition cycle.  Visual artists and curators are invited to submit applications before May 15, 2020 as outlined below. Download this page as a PDF

Applications should include the following:

  • A one-page cover letter (What interests you in being a member of an artist-run gallery? What has been your involvement in the arts in New Orleans to date?  What skills and passions would you bring to a ten-member collective?  What type of work do you envision exhibiting in the space?).  The cover letter should include name, address, contact information, and website (if applicable).

  • Fifteen digital images of your work, sized at 10 inches on the longest dimension and at 72dpi.  Files should be named with the artist’s first name, last name, and a two-digit number (e.g. John_Doe_01.jpg).

  • An image list that corresponds to the file name of each image, listing the title, date, medium, and dimensions of the work pictured.

  • A up-to-date CV with exhibition record and professional activities listed therein.  Please note that images of recent work are of more importance in the evaluation of the application than professional accomplishments and exhibition record.

  • Contact information for three professional references that would be able to speak to your work, collegiality, and professional conduct.  Please list in a single document the names of these three individuals and their contact information (name, telephone number, email address).  Please do not include current Staple Goods members in this list.

Monthly dues at Staple Goods are $40, allowing the group to maintain a professional gallery space and to cover the utilities, insurances, and licenses required to conduct business in the St. Claude Avenue Arts District.  Staple Goods members contributing monthly dues means that 100% of sales in the gallery space are retained by the exhibiting artist.  Dues also cover Staple Goods’ listing in Art in America (print and online platform) and allow for the maintenance of Staple Goods’ website, which features individual artists as well as chronicling previous exhibitions.

Artists receive two exhibition slots per two-year exhibition cycle, during which they can exhibit their own work or curate a group or solo exhibition.  Sharing exhibition slots with other artists or collectives is a way to network with regional and national artists, while simultaneously diversifying the gallery’s programming.  Member group exhibitions occur at least once per year, and are typically scheduled for at least one month of the Prospect New Orleans triennial. Our exhibitions have been reviewed in prominent periodicals and are routinely announced in local and regional listings.  Staple Goods has mounted group exhibitions in Nashville, TN and at The Clemente in New York City.

Artists are required to gallery sit once a month (on average) from 12-5pm on a Saturday or Sunday, participate in routine duties such as email correspondence, gallery upkeep, reception setup/breakdown, and group exhibition installation/deinstallation.

Please email finished applications or questions to staplegoodsnola@gmail.com, or call 504.908.7331.  Finished applications should contain the word “Application” in the subject line.
